On this exclusive tour we will uncover the secrets of the ancient agricultural past, looking through the last 4-6 thousand years of the Tucson basin history. We start at the beginning at Native Seeds/SEARCH to see how the seeds of the past are being preserved and resurrected into modern farming. A tasting at Native Seeds lets you see how some of these ingredients are still in use today. Next, we take a short trip to Mission Gardens where we see how these seeds were used and cultivated. A docent will lead us through the working gardens and explain how some of the original strains, tracing back hundreds of years, have survived.
Lunch is included at Tucson's most recent James Beard Award winning restaurant, El Guero Canelo, best known for their Carne Asada and their famous Sonoran hot dogs!
After lunch, we continue our trip through time to the Presidio San Agustin del Tucson to get a demonstration of how the cultivated seeds were used in everyday life during the time of the Spanish occupation of the area.
Last, but not least, we get another sampling of how these ancient seeds are used in modern life at the awards winning Barrio Bread. Barrio Bread is a true neighborhood bakery that showcases the art and science of Don Guerra's passion for baking and his commitment to community. Barrio Bread is dedicated to exceptional quality Artisan bread, created with centuries-old baking techniques and locally grown heritage grains. Barrio Bread loaves are know for a chewy interior and amazing crusts.Itinerary
